Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) is calling on the government to fast-track the second phase of the Ghana Gas plant project.

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah has urged the government to expedite work on the second phase of the Ghana Gas Processing Plant.

He believes the expansion will boost current production levels and position the country to achieve full self-reliance in gas production, thereby eliminating the need for imports.

Mr. Amoah made the appeal during an interview on the sidelines of a two-day familiarization visit to the processing facility in the Western Region. The visit brought together several civil society organizations and marked their first opportunity to tour the plant since it began operations in 2014.

According to Head of Corporate Communications for Ghana Gas, Richard Kirk Mensah, the two-day familiarization visit by civil society organizations is part of the Ghana Gas 2025/2026 strategy designed to strengthen relationships between the company and civil society groups by offering them firsthand insight into its operations for the first time since the plant began operations.

He further stated that Ghana Gas is awaiting Cabinet approval of a technical report submitted by the Energy and Finance Committee concerning the reconstruction of Phase Two of the project.

Once approved, the expansion will facilitate the establishment of substations in every region, ensuring reliable access for off-takers and supporting the country’s broader industrialization agenda.

“Once that is done, it lies with Ghana Gas to begin the construction of the Takoradi and Tema pipeline. We are already using the onshore transmission line, but the second transmission line which we want to build offshore and be solely owned by Ghana Gas aims to establish substations in every region for off-takers to support industrialization purposes.

“So this is a major project that the board and management are seriously considering to start as soon as possible. Additionally, the third compressor station will make the utilization of gas production very effective,” he said.

After visiting the company’s operational facility and substations in the Western Region and witnessing the full takeover by Ghanaian engineers, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, urged the government to expedite the commencement of the second phase of the Ghana Gas Processing Plant.

He believes this expansion will augment current production levels, make the country fully self-reliant in gas production, eliminate the need for imports, and help sustain the country’s power sector.

“We need the Gas Processing Plant Phase Two to come on stream so that it can add a lot more capacity. I will be very happy if we become LPG self-reliant and no longer need to import LPG at all. Currently, despite what Ghana Gas delivers, we still import some LPG from Europe to augment supply. If we are able to complete Phase Two, chances are we can take over 100% of the market without importing LPG from other places.

“For the power sector, this means we will have a lot more gas available for thermal generation. So we are pleading that whatever support the authorities or government can provide to expedite the coming on stream of Phase Two, we want to see it done within the next twelve, or maximum twenty-four months,” Duncan mentioned.
