‘Leadership Is Temporary and Fleeting’ — Mahama Tells Appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has urged his appointees to embrace humility and remember that leadership is ultimately temporary and fleeting.

He made the call during a national thanksgiving service held at the forecourt of Jubilee House to mark his first year in office.

Reflecting on the challenges and achievements of his administration over the past year, President Mahama described the period as one of difficult decisions and reforms, but also of laying foundations for sustainable progress. He acknowledged that greater challenges lie ahead, yet stressed that they also present significant opportunities for national advancement.

“The years ahead will demand even more from us. They will test our resolve, our patience, and our discipline. But they also offer opportunities… opportunities to accelerate our growth and ensure that development and progress reach every part of our country,” he said.

The President emphasized that leadership must be grounded in humility, empathy, and courage, reminding public officials that governance is an act of stewardship. “Let us move forward with humility. Let us lead with empathy. Let us govern with courage. And let us never forget that leadership is stewardship, it is temporary and fleeting,” he declared.

He further called for a recommitment to ethical leadership, service above self, and governance anchored in integrity, competence, and compassion. He urged leaders to listen more attentively to the voices of the vulnerable, the youth, and those who feel excluded.

“The work we have begun is far from finished, but today reminds us that progress is not measured only by numbers and by charts and diagrams. It is also measured by hope that is restored, by trust that is rebuilt, and correct direction that is regained,” President Mahama added.
