A second-hand clothes seller has been electrocuted at the Takoradi Market Circle following a heavy downpour during the night of February 24.
The deceased, a man in his forties popularly known as “Omama,” operated near A.A Mensah Pharmacy at the Market Circle in Takoradi.
He was pronounced dead soon after police rushed him to the Takoradi Hospital.
His body has since been conveyed to the mortuary for further investigations.
The incident, according to an eyewitness, occurred after metal pillars at one of the shops became electrified following the rainfall.
An eyewitness, Nana Kwame, told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show on February 25, that the deceased had closed from work and was going home when the tragedy struck.Remove ads
“He is a well-known second-hand clothes seller here in Takoradi. He had closed from work, packed his clothes, and was heading home when the incident occurred,” the eyewitness said.
“One of the shops has metal pillars, and after the rainfall yesterday, the pillars became live and started shocking anyone who touched them. One of his colleagues first touched one of the metal pillars and felt an electric shock. He quickly warned the deceased not to touch it, but it appears he did not hear the warning.
“Unfortunately, he held the metal pillar and was electrocuted. He died shortly after. The police were later invited to the scene, and the body was conveyed to the mortuary for further investigations,” he indicated.
The tragic incident has thrown his colleague traders into a state of mourning, with many of them keeping their shops closed on Wednesday, February 25.
