
Fishermen attacked at sea: All 59 victims rescued and safely returned to shore, confirms MP Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui.
Also, 4 out of the 7 canoes which were attacked have also arrived at shore with reports that two out of the three remaining boats have arrived at Tema while the remaining one moved to Chorkor.
Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed in an interview with JoyNews that all the fishermen are safe and being medically checked after which they will return to their families.
“59 fishermen were affected by the incidents. There are 4 boats that have arrived here at Senya Breku. Two went to Tema and one went to Chorkor or so. We are still trying to get further information on the one that went to Chorkor.
“But they are all fine, they are here NADMO is taking their details, CID is taking their details, we are refreshing them a bit and after that we will let them go for a health check before we will allow them to go. Everybody is safe,” she stated.
The MP expressed gratitude to all authorities and security agencies which were present and ensured the safely return of the fishermen.
Earlier, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the armed attack on the fishermen at sea near Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region.
According to the MP, the incident occurred during a night fishing expedition when armed men stormed the fishing grounds under the cover of darkness.Remove ads
The attackers reportedly fired several warning shots, held the fishermen at gunpoint and seized their equipment.
In an interview on Joy FM, she said the assailants targeted fishermen operating seven canoes, particularly those who had gone towards the Nyanyano side.
“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked,” she stated.
More than 50 fishermen were left stranded offshore after the attackers made away with seven outboard motors, generator sets and other valuables. The robbers were said to be operating a black boat.
“They were robbed of their outboard motors and generator sets by a black boat. I cannot disclose the nationality of the attackers. Investigations are ongoing,” the MP added.
The victims had reportedly set out to fish in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, and were returning to shore when the incident occurred.
