Ghanaian music duo, Lali X Lola have appealed to the Board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) for a reinstatement of the Group of the Year Category into this year’s award scheme.
In a letter dated March 17, 2026, the artistes argued that the omission of the Group of the Year category “may inadvertently contribute to the very challenge it seeks to address namely, the limited number of active and competitive music groups in Ghana.”
Last year, the Board annulled the category with concerns that there is not a sufficient number of qualifying groups to sustain the category.
But Lali X Lola argued that the Board’s reasoning presents a classic “chicken-and-egg” situation.
The music duo explained that award platforms such as TGMA play a critical role not only in recognizing excellence but also in shaping industry behavior and growth.
They believe that by maintaining the “Group of the Year” category, the TGMA Board is actively encourages the formation, development, and sustainability of music groups in Ghana’s music industry.
The Afro-fusion artistes noted that the suspension of the category further risks discouraging investment in group acts, which is already more complex manage and survive.
“Conversely, its removal risks discouraging investment in group acts, which are already more complex to manage, brand, and sustain compared to solo artists. Music groups bring a unique dynamic to the industry—blending diverse talents, fostering collaboration, and creating memorable cultural moments that often transcend individual artistry.

“Their presence enriches Ghana’s music landscape and strengthens its global appeal,” the artistes stated.
Lali X Lola have since appealed for the category to be reinstated into the award scheme.
“We therefore respectfully appeal to the Board to reconsider this decision and reinstate the “Group of the Year” category. Doing so would send a strong signal of support to existing groups and inspire emerging talents to explore collaborative artistry,” the statement read.
according to them, the reinstatement will in the long term not only preserve an important aspect of Ghana’s musical heritage but also contribute to a more diverse and competitive industry.
“We appreciate your continued dedication to the growth and recognition of Ghanaian music and remain hopeful that this concern will be given due consideration,” the statement concluded.
