Ken Ofori-Atta removed from ICE detainee register.

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to checks on the agency’s detainee locator system.

The development was further confirmed by activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who indicated that his sources say Mr Ofori-Atta was released on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

Mr Ofori-Atta had been in ICE custody since early January after his arrest in the United States over issues relating to his immigration status.

He was picked up by ICE officials in January, 2026, in the Virginia area, with his legal team later confirming the detention was linked to the legality of his stay in the country.

Following his arrest, he was held at an ICE detention facility in Virginia, where he remained for several weeks as legal processes, including immigration proceedings and an extradition request from Ghana, unfolded.

During his detention, he was denied bail by a U.S. court while contesting the case and seeking to resolve his immigration status.

Mr Ofori-Atta’s detention drew public and political attention, given his role as a former finance minister.

The latest development now raises fresh questions about the next phase of the legal and immigration processes, including whether he will remain in the United States or face possible extradition.

As of now, there has been no official statement from U.S. authorities or his legal team detailing the conditions surrounding his release.
